With the gyms closed and group training on hold, many of us are turning to running and cycling to support our health and wellbeing during lockdown. No matter what your experience level or where you are starting from, you will definitely feel the benefits of complimenting your chosen sport with a yoga practice, here are 5 reasons why!
Yoga has been our pillar of support during this turbulent year - Not just the asana and meditation practice, but also for keeping a sense of routine, healthy habits, community, and our connection with those who share this with us. Our priority for each and every one who joins us for their practice at Heather Yoga is that you feel very much part of a community and our journey.
Yoga is about balancing effort and ease, so there should be no straining to reach your toes. One of the beautiful things I feel that we often forget about with the yoga practice, is that it is one of those very unique and rare times in the day where we don’t need to achieve anything at all! Its an opportunity to let go of our ego and meet ourselves ‘where we are’ not ‘where we would like to be’.
Over recent years, yoga has been commonly marketed as a means to get fit, and while improved fitness can often be one of the ‘perks’ of a regular asana practise, it’s certainly not traditionally regarded as the primary goal. There are of course the obvious superficial physical advantages, including increased strength, flexibility, balance and improved posture, whereas the less marketed, yet arguably more profound energetic benefits are only realised by many of us once we start to feel and experience them ourselves.
Our home for Yoga in Saltaire has reopened with studio classes now up & running again after over 5 months! We’re over the moon to welcome you back and cannot wait to see you in 3D again sharing this practice together at the space as we journey towards some kind of ‘normality’ :-)
Please make sure you have everything you need to support your practice and body in a very skilful way, and that investing in props can allow you to really experience the different yoga poses with a sense of space, steadiness and ease.
One of the definitions which really struck a chord with me, is when being embodied was likened to that feeling we've all experienced, when you know deep down whether a situation or event feels right or wrong. Our minds might be telling us one thing, but in my experience, that wiser intuitive feeling never lies. This was the moment that I knew there was more to this, and it had my full attention.
Over the years I have learned a few important lessons and I wanted to share the four reasons why I think yoga and fitness training are the perfect pair.
Whether you are an olympic lifter, cardio lover or a weekend walker, hopefully you will find something useful!
